🇵🇭 Tagalog — Day 1 Module
Welcome to Day 1 of your 90-day journey to conversational Tagalog fluency! Today we build the initial vocal and mental muscle memory with the five pure vowels, 10 foundational greeting and politeness words, and your first introductory sentence pattern.
⏱️ Your 30-Minute Daily Schedule
1. Pronunciation — The Pure Vowels
One nice thing about Tagalog is that Filipino spelling is relatively phonetic. Once you learn the basic sounds, you can usually make a good attempt at pronouncing any unfamiliar word correctly.
The Five Basic Vowels
| Letter | Sound | Description |
|---|---|---|
| A | "ah" | Like the 'a' in father (crisp, open mouth) |
| E | "eh" | Like the 'e' in bed (short, clean sound) |
| I | "ee" | Like the 'ee' in see (pure 'ee', never 'eye') |
| O | "oh" | Like the 'o' in go (rounded single sound, not 'ow') |
| U | "oo" | Like the 'oo' in moon (deep, steady vowel) |
Vocal Warmup Exercises
A — E — I — O — U
ma — me — mi — mo — mu
pa — pe — pi — po — pu
Don't try to force an American-English diphthong accent onto Tagalog vowels. Aim for crisp, clear, individual syllables with even vocal weight.
2. Vocabulary — 10 Essential Words
Today we focus exclusively on 10 foundational words and phrases. Don't worry about memorizing hundreds of words yet — we are laying a solid rock-bottom base.

- Okay / Alright: Agreement in conversation.
- Sure / Go ahead: Giving permission.
- Let's do it / Bye for now: Often used when parting (e.g. "Sige, paalam!").
3. Grammar — Your First Sentence Patterns
Tagalog grammar has unique features, but today we keep it very simple with two fundamental introductory patterns.
Pattern 1: "I am..."
The basic word for I / me is ako. To introduce yourself, use:
Literally: ako identifies "I", while si is the proper noun marker that must precede a person's name.
Pattern 2: "You are..."
The emphatic front-of-sentence word for you is ikaw:
Note: You'll learn more natural conversational patterns later. Today we simply get your brain comfortable with identifying names and pronouns!
4. Listening — The Shadowing Technique
Shadow with the phrases below. Use the toggle button to test your comprehension:
1. First Listen: Don't worry about understanding everything. Just identify which words you recognize.
2. Second Listen: Pause after each phrase and repeat it aloud.
3. Third Listen: Try saying the phrase immediately after the speaker without pausing (shadowing).
5. Speaking — Active Drills
Now we actually use the language out loud. Speaking from memory is far more important than perfection today.
Exercise A: Greetings (Say Each 3x)
Say each one out loud 3 times. Check off as you complete:
