Phase 1: Survival Tagalog • Day 4 of 90 ⏱️ 30 Minutes Absolute Beginner

🇵🇭 Tagalog — Day 4 Module

Counting, Age, Quantities & Number Questions

Numbers are excellent pronunciation and comprehension practice because they force you to speak and listen clearly. Don't just memorize them in order—learn to recognize them randomly, state your age, and ask number-related questions.

🎯 Today's Goal: By the end of Day 4, you should be able to count from 1–20 smoothly, state your age, ask 'How many?' (Ilan?), and recognize numbers in everyday situations.
  • Count from 1–20 in Tagalog without pausing
  • Understand numbers when spoken slowly
  • Say your age using the '_____ taong gulang ako' pattern
  • Recognize simple quantities and numbers randomly
  • Ask and answer basic number-related questions with 'Ilan?'
  • Begin recognizing numbers in prices and everyday situations
Section 1 • 0:00–5:00

💡 Linguistic Note: The "Labi-" Prefix (11–19)

The prefix labi- means 'excess' or 'in addition to ten'. It adapts phonetically to the first letter of the root number:

  • Before vowels & w: becomes labing- (e.g. labing-isa, labing-apat, labing-walo)
  • Before p & b: becomes labim- (e.g. labimpito)
  • Before d, t, l, s: becomes labin- (e.g. labindalawa, labintatlo, labinlima, labinsiyam)
Section 3 • 10:00–15:00

3. ⏱️ 10–15 Min — Grammar: Real-World Number Patterns

Put your numbers into immediate conversational practice with these three core formulas:

Pattern 1 — "How many?" (Ilan?)

An essential question word for asking quantities of countable things:

Ilan? or Ilan ang gusto mo?

Ilan asks about countable quantity (how many), while Magkano asks about monetary price (how much).

• Ilan? → How many?
🌐
• Ilan ang gusto mo? → How many do you want?
🌐
• Dalawa ang gusto ko. → I want two.
🌐

Pattern 2 — "How old are you?" (Ilang taon ka na?)

Ask and state age naturally:

Ilang taon ka na? → [Number] taong gulang ako.

For today, focus on memorizing the core frame: _____ taong gulang ako.

• Ilang taon ka na? → How old are you? (Lit: How many years are you now?)
🌐
• Dalawampung taong gulang ako. → I am 20 years old.
🌐
• Labinlimang taong gulang ako. → I am 15 years old.
🌐

Pattern 3 — Stating Quantity Directly

In everyday conversational situations, you can simply answer with the number:

Ilan? → [Number] (lang).
• Ilan? → Tatlo. → How many? → Three.
🌐
• Ilan? → Lima. → How many? → Five.
🌐
• Dalawa lang. → Only two / Just two.
🌐
