🇵🇭 Tagalog — Day 31 Module
Welcome to Phase 2 of your 90-Day journey! Today the curriculum changes gears as we step from isolated survival phrases into the real engine of Tagalog: verbs. We will uncover what a verb root is, why Filipino verbs change form, and how to recognize the three core aspect categories: Ongoing (kumakain), Completed (kumain), and Contemplated/Future (kakain).
- Identify common verb roots: kain, inom, luto, bili, punta, uwi, tulog, ligo, gising, trabaho
- Distinguish between Ongoing (in progress), Completed (past), and Contemplated (future) aspects
- Produce the 3-aspect paradigm for KAIN: Kumakain ako • Kumain ako • Kakain ako
- Apply the 3-aspect paradigm across INOM, LUTO, and PUNTA
- Produce compound sentences incorporating direct objects using 'ng' (ng kanin, ng tubig, ng manok)
- Score 9+/10 on the Day 31 Aspect Translation Test

Ano ang pangalan mo? → 'Ako si Jeff.' • Taga-saan ka? → 'Taga-Amerika ako.' • Nasaan ka? → 'Nasa bahay ako.'
Today we are not trying to memorize every grammatical nuance of Tagalog verb conjugation. Focus simply on recognizing how the verb root transforms to indicate time.
2. ⏱️ 5–10 Min — What Is a Verb Root? & The 3 Big Categories
A verb root is the core base word that carries the fundamental action meaning. Filipino transforms this root to convey time and aspect:
| Tagalog | English Meaning | Context & Audio |
|---|---|---|
| kain (root) | eat |
kain → kumakain / kumain / kakain
|
| inom (root) | drink |
inom → umiinom / uminom / iinom
|
| luto (root) | cook |
luto → nagluluto / nagluto / magluluto
|
| bili (root) | buy |
bili → bumibili / bumili / bibili
|
| punta (root) | go |
punta → pumupunta / pumunta / pupunta
|
| uwi • tulog (roots) | go home • sleep |
uwi → umuuwi | tulog → natutulog
|
| ligo • gising (roots) | bathe • wake up |
ligo → naliligo | gising → gumigising
|
| trabaho (root) | work |
trabaho → nagtatrabaho
|
In Filipino, time is viewed through the lens of aspect (whether the action has started, completed, or is contemplated):
- 🟢 Ongoing / In Progress (Imperfective): Happening now or regularly → Kumakain ako (I am eating).
- 🔵 Completed (Perfective): Already finished → Kumain ako (I ate).
- 🟠 Contemplated / Future: Has not happened yet → Kakain ako (I will eat / going to eat).
3. ⏱️ 10–15 Min — Your First Verb Paradigm: KAIN (Eat)
