🇵🇭 Tagalog — Day 46 Module

Necessity & Obligations: Stating What You Need to Have and Need to Do

Today you learn to express necessity using 'kailangan'. While 'gusto' conveys personal desires, 'kailangan' communicates essential requirements—needing water, food, medicine, money, rest, or urgent help, as well as needing to perform actions like working, going home, and sleeping.

🎯 Today's Goal: Communicate essential personal needs, obligations, and urgent requests naturally using 'kailangan ko ng...' and 'kailangan kong...'.
  • Distinguish 'Gusto ko' (I want) from 'Kailangan ko' (I need)
  • Master the object formula: 'Kailangan ko ng [Bagay]' (water, food, help, money, medicine)
  • Master the action formula: 'Kailangan kong [Pandiwa]' (eat, drink, work, go home, rest)
  • Ask and respond to 'Ano ang kailangan mo?' and 'Kailangan mo ba ng tulong?'
  • Navigate emergency, medical, store, and work scenarios involving critical needs
  • Score 9+/10 on the Day 46 Expressing Needs Test
Section 1 • 0:00–5:00

3. ⏱️ 10–15 Min — Stating Needs: Nouns vs Actions

The two vital patterns for communicating what you need to have vs what you need to do:

Pattern 1: Needing an Object (Noun)

Use 'Kailangan ko ng [Bagay]':

Kailangan ko ng + [tubig / pagkain / tulong / pera / oras / gamot]
• Kailangan ko ng tubig. → I need water.
🌐
• Kailangan ko ng tulong. → I need help.
🌐
• Kailangan ko ng pera. → I need money.
🌐
• Kailangan ko ng oras. → I need time.
🌐

Pattern 2: Needing to Perform an Action (Verb)

Link 'ko' with '-ng' to the action infinitive:

Kailangan kong + [kumain / uminom / magtrabaho / umuwi / matulog / magpahinga]
• Kailangan kong kumain. → I need to eat.
🌐
• Kailangan kong uminom ng tubig. → I need to drink water.
🌐
• Kailangan kong magtrabaho. → I need to work.
🌐
• Kailangan kong umuwi at matulog. → I need to go home and sleep.
